Japanese: シラネワラビ - しらねわらび

A perennial, summer-green fern of the Dryopteris family. The Japanese name, Shirane, comes from Mt. Shirane in Nikko. It often forms dominant communities under coniferous forests in the subalpine zone. The rhizome is thick, with the lower part lying horizontally underground and the upper part rising obliquely to touch the ground surface, and several leaves growing in clusters. The leaves are 3-4 times pinnate and compound, with large ones reaching a length of 1 m. The petiole is the same length as the blade or slightly shorter. The petiole scales are usually ovate to narrowly ovate, membranous, dark brown at the base, and light brown at the top. The leaf shape varies widely, ranging from pentagonal to oblong.
