A river that flows through southwestern Hokkaido and merges with the Ishikari River. It flows out from the eastern shore of Lake Shikotsu, flows down the Shikotsu volcanic alluvial fan, enters Chitose City, meanders north through the lowlands of Naganuma, merges with the old Yubari River to become the Ebetsu River, and merges with the Ishikari River in Ebetsu City. It is 73.8 km long. The water source is lake water, so the water volume is constant and clear. There are five power plants between the lakeside and Chitose City that provide power for Oji Paper Co., Ltd., and there is a salmon and trout hatchery on the outskirts of Chitose City. In the middle and lower reaches, the river is used for irrigation and industrial water. [Narabe Osamu] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
