983‐1073 A Russian monk. Founder of the Kiev Monastery of the Caves, which played a major role in shaping Russian Christian culture. He became a monk on Mount Athos in Greece, and in 1051, together with Feodosiy (?-1074), founded a monastery in a cave on a hill overlooking the Dnieper River. This was the beginning of monasticism in Russia, and they used the Rules of the Studeon Monastery of Constantinople. Antony himself went to Chernigov in 1069, where he founded a new monastery.
