A river in Western Siberia, Russia. It originates in the Altai Mountains, flows north, and empties into the Gulf of Ob in the Kara Sea of the Arctic Ocean. The main stream is 3,701 km long, and its major tributary, the Irtysh River, is 5,568 km long from its source. It is a typical plain river, occupying vast valleys in the middle and lower reaches, and has many branches. It freezes over from November to April in the upper reaches, and from October to May in the lower reaches. It is navigable for about 3,500 km.
