An ancient Slavic tribe. According to Jordanes, the Slavs of the 6th century consisted of the Venedi in the north, the Skrabens in the southwest, and the Ants in the southeast, with the latter two having similar lifestyles apart from pottery. They invaded Byzantine territory from 518, bringing about the Slavification of the Balkans, but the Ants were attacked by the Turkish Avars who advanced westwards from 560, and disappear from historical records after 602. They were probably absorbed by the Skrabens who had migrated there. [Kunimoto Tetsuo] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
