A general term for insects of the Nymphalidae family, Lepidoptera, subfamily Argynninae. In the narrow sense, it refers to one of these species. The fritillary butterfly Brenthis daphne (illustration) is distributed from southern Europe through Siberia to all over Japan, and appears once a year. Its wingspan is about 5cm. It is also called the double fritillary. The larvae feed on burnet plants and hydrangeas, and overwinter as middle-aged larvae. They are often found in mountain grasslands. All fritillary butterflies (English name: fritillary) have persimmon-colored wings with many black spots on the upper surface, hence the name "leopard pattern."
