Strasbourg is a cathedral (church with a bishop's seat) dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the central city of Alsace in northeastern France. It is made of reddish brown sandstone. After the Romanesque cathedral consecrated in 1015 was destroyed by fire in 1176, it was rebuilt in Gothic style between 1180 and 1270, preserving the crypt, apse, and part of the main entrance. The main entrance was later destroyed, but was restored together with the north tower in 1276-77. Despite the complete destruction caused by the war of 1870-71, it was beautifully restored, including the sculptures and stained glass. Sculptures from the mid-13th century remain on the main entrance and the doorways of the north and south transepts. The sculpture of the "pillar of angels" standing in the center of the south transept inside is also beautiful. The stained glass, created between 1250 and 1270, is also of high quality, including the "rose window" in the north transept. The old town of Strasbourg, in which the cathedral is located, was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1988 (World Heritage Site).
