Utility function

Japanese: 効用関数 - こうようかんすう（英語表記）utility function

A function that converts the utility of things, energy, information, services, etc. into a numerical value. Consider a situation in which you are comparing the value, goodness, importance, preference, etc. of several objects. When object x is considered to be equal to or greater than object y, we say that x is preferred over y, and this can be expressed as x ≿ y. A preference relation is a relationship that defines preferences for all possible pairs of two objects. For any three objects x, y, and z, if x ≿ y and y ≿ z, then the preference relation is said to satisfy the transitivity law when x ≿ z.

物，エネルギー，情報，サービスなどの効用を数値におきかえる関数をいう。幾つかの対象について，その価値，良さ，重要さ，好みなどを比較している状況を考える。対象xが対象yと同等以上と考えるとき，xをyより選好するといい，x≿yと表す。可能なすべての二つの対象の組について選好を定めたものを選好関係という。　任意の三つの対象x，y，zについて，x≿yかつy≿zならば，x≿zであるとき，その選好関係は推移律を満たすという。
