The central road from Asahikawa to Abashiri was opened in 1891, but agricultural development in Shirataki began after 1908, and began in earnest after 1912, when 55 households from Wakayama Prefecture settled there. 90% of the village area is forest, most of which is national forest, mainly natural forest, and the main industry is forestry, but resources are depleting due to damage from Typhoon No. 15 in 1981.
