A town in Nishiokitama County in the central south of Yamagata Prefecture. Its capital is Arato in the northern part of the Nagai Basin, and it is the terminus of the Yamagata Railway. It once flourished as a river port for shipping on the Mogami River. There are extensive mulberry fields on the terraces on the west bank of the Mogami River, and Arato was a bustling mulberry market. In addition to sericulture, the town also produces rice, vegetables, and fruit, and also raises livestock. Manufacturing is thriving. Area: 157.71 km2 . Population: 15,314 (2010). 山形県中南部,西置賜(にしおきたま)郡の町。中心は長井盆地北部の荒砥(あらと)で山形鉄道の終点。かつては最上川舟運の河港として栄えた。最上川西岸の段丘上には桑畑が広く,荒砥は桑市でにぎわった。養蚕が行われるほか,米,野菜,果樹などを産し,畜産も行う。製造業が盛ん。157.71km2。1万5314人(2010)。
