Empress Teimei

Empress of Emperor Taisho. Mother of Emperor Showa, Prince Chichibu Yasuhito, Prince Takamatsu Nobuhito, and Prince Mikasa Takahito. Her name was Sadako. She was born on June 25, 1884 as the fourth daughter of Duke Kujo Michitaka. In 1898 (Meiji 31), she graduated from the Peerage Girls' School Primary School Department, and on May 10, 1900, she married Crown Prince Harunomiya Yoshihito. On July 30, 1912 (Taisho 1), she was proclaimed empress upon the death of Emperor Meiji, and her enthronement ceremony was held in November 1915. On December 25, 1951, she became empress dowager upon the death of Emperor Taisho, and in 1955, she moved to the Omiya Palace (within the Akasaka Imperial Palace Gardens). She died of angina pectoris on May 17, 1951, and was posthumously named Empress Teimei in June of the same year. She is buried alongside Emperor Taisho in Tama Higashi Mausoleum in Hachioji, Tokyo. As empress, she devoted herself to the sickly Emperor Taisho, and as empress dowager, she assisted with leprosy relief efforts. She also enjoyed waka poetry, which are collected in the "Collection of Empress Teimei" compiled by the Imperial Household Agency Archives and Mausolea Department.

大正天皇の皇后。昭和天皇、秩父(ちちぶ)宮雍仁(やすひと)親王、高松宮宣仁(のぶひと)親王、三笠(みかさ)宮崇仁(たかひと)親王の生母。名は節子(さだこ)。明治17年6月25日公爵九条道孝(くじょうみちたか)の第四女として生まれる。1898年（明治31）華族女学校小学部を卒業、1900年5月10日皇太子明宮嘉仁(はるのみやよしひと)親王と結婚。12年（大正1）7月30日明治天皇の死去とともに皇后の宣下を受け、15年11月即位の大典を挙行した。26年12月25日大正天皇の死去により皇太后となり、30年（昭和5）には大宮御所（赤坂離宮御苑内）に移り、昭和26年5月17日狭心症のため死去、同年6月貞明皇后と追号された。陵墓は東京都八王子市の多摩東陵で、大正天皇と並んで葬られている。皇后としては病弱な大正天皇によく尽くし、皇太后としては救癩(きゅうらい)事業などを援助した。また和歌をたしなみ、それらは宮内庁書陵部編『貞明皇后御集』に収められている。
