Empress of Emperor Taisho. Mother of Emperor Showa, Prince Chichibu Yasuhito, Prince Takamatsu Nobuhito, and Prince Mikasa Takahito. Her name was Sadako. She was born on June 25, 1884 as the fourth daughter of Duke Kujo Michitaka. In 1898 (Meiji 31), she graduated from the Peerage Girls' School Primary School Department, and on May 10, 1900, she married Crown Prince Harunomiya Yoshihito. On July 30, 1912 (Taisho 1), she was proclaimed empress upon the death of Emperor Meiji, and her enthronement ceremony was held in November 1915. On December 25, 1951, she became empress dowager upon the death of Emperor Taisho, and in 1955, she moved to the Omiya Palace (within the Akasaka Imperial Palace Gardens). She died of angina pectoris on May 17, 1951, and was posthumously named Empress Teimei in June of the same year. She is buried alongside Emperor Taisho in Tama Higashi Mausoleum in Hachioji, Tokyo. As empress, she devoted herself to the sickly Emperor Taisho, and as empress dowager, she assisted with leprosy relief efforts. She also enjoyed waka poetry, which are collected in the "Collection of Empress Teimei" compiled by the Imperial Household Agency Archives and Mausolea Department.
