The Niwada clan originated from Tsunesuke, the third son of Prince Atsumi, son of Emperor Uda, and the 10th Gon Chunagon (provisional middle counselor) of the Minister of the Left, Minamoto Masanobu. After Tsunesuke's grandson Shigesuke, the Niwada clan split into two branches, the Niwada and the Tamukai clan. Shigesuke's daughter Sukeko served Emperor Suko and gave birth to Prince Akihito (the first Fushiminomiya), and Shigesuke's son Tsuneari's daughter Sachiko became the wife of Prince Akihito's son, Prince Sadanari (Go-Sukōin), and gave birth to Prince Hikohito (Emperor Gohanazono). The Niwada clan had a strong connection with the Imperial family and the Fushiminomiya clan. The Niwada clan's status as aristocrats was that of the Urin clan, and their highest rank was Gon Dainagon. During the Edo period, they were awarded 350 koku and served the Imperial Court as a Kagura family. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
