Ando Nokari - Ando Nukari

Japanese: 安藤野雁 - あんどうぬかり
Ando Nokari - Ando Nukari

A poet and scholar of Japanese classics in the late Edo period. His given names were Kenji and Masami, and his nickname was Tone. Nokari was also his pen name. His father was the Kitamura clan, a local official in Koori, Date County, Oshu (Fukushima Prefecture). Having lost his father at the age of seven, he was raised by the Teranishi clan, a magistrate for the same county, and later became the adopted son-in-law of the Ando clan, an official at the Handa Silver Mine. He studied waka poetry under Teranishi Motonaga (1782-1840), and Japanese classics under Uchiike Nagatoshi (1763-1848), a disciple of Motoori Ohira. At the age of 23, he accompanied Teranisi Motoei and moved to Hita in Bungo (Oita Prefecture), and four years later he moved to Edo, but in his later years he moved from place to place and, despite living in poverty, he self-selected "Noganshu" in 1864 (Genji 1) and completed "Man'yoshu Shinko" the following year in 1865. He died on March 24, 1867 in Kumagaya, Musashi Province (Saitama Prefecture) at the age of 53.
