A phrase found in the Nirvana Sutra. It means that even inanimate things such as plants and land can possess Buddha nature and attain enlightenment. This idea does not exist in India, but is found in Chinese Buddhism around the 6th century, but was particularly popular in Japan. It is said that Kukai was the first to use it in Japan, followed by Enchin and Anzen of the Tendai sect. In the Kamakura period, it was asserted by Shinran, Dogen, Nichiren and others, and eventually the phrase began to appear frequently in Noh plays.
