A US company that is the world's number one manufacturer of construction machinery such as bulldozers and tractors. Formerly known as Caterpillar Tractor Co., the name Caterpillar comes from the name of the company itself. Founded in 1925, the company grew rapidly due to military demand, such as tanks in World War II. They also manufacture diesel engines, natural gas engines, and turbines for power generation. They are focusing on developing the Russian and Chinese markets. New Caterpillar Mitsubishi, a joint venture with Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, changed its name to Caterpillar Japan Co., Ltd. in 2008. Headquartered in Illinois. Sales for the fiscal year ending December 2010 were $42,588 million.
