Fromentin - Eugène Fromentin

Fromentin - Eugène Fromentin

French painter and writer. Born in La Rochelle, he went to Paris to study law and painting. He traveled to Algeria, where he was fortunate to become famous as a painter of Oriental landscapes, and made a living by painting. However, Fromentin's reputation as a painter declined rapidly after his death. However, as the author of the confessional novel "Dominique" (1863), Fromentin still retains his unique value and fascination. This work is a love story in which almost nothing happens, and is similar to the novels of Hori Tatsuo, for example, but it contains sharp semiotics and an attempt to transform music into a novel, giving it depth. Another feature is the calm and precise depiction of the French people's affection for pastoral poetry. Fromentin also wrote "Old Masters" (1876), which discusses Van Eyck, Memling, Rubens, Rembrandt, and others, based on his diary from a trip to Belgium and the Netherlands in 1875. This is the most excellent guide to how to look at paintings.
