Showboat - Showboat (English spelling)

It can be translated as theater boat or entertainment boat. It was operated with the purpose of putting on shows on boats going up and down the Mississippi River in the United States, and was popular in the 1800s when entertainment facilities were not yet developed. Mike Fink's boat from the 1810s is famous, but the first real showboat is said to be Chapman's Floating Theatre, which appeared in 1831 by William Chapman Sr. In 1851, the huge Floating Circus Palace, which could accommodate 3,400 people, also appeared, and was used as a hospital ship during the Civil War. After the Civil War, a ship named New Sensation by Augustus Byron French became popular, but it quickly declined after that.

A classic musical set on a showboat in the late 19th century, Show Boat, with music composed by Jerome Kern, opened on Broadway in December 1927 and has been performed many times to this day. Based on the novel of the same name (1926) by female author Edna Ferber, the book and lyrics were written by Oscar Hammerstein Jr. The story revolves around the love between Magnolia, the only daughter of showboat captain Andy, and gambler Gaylord, and also intertwines the tragedy of racial discrimination in which Julie, a mixed-race singer, is oppressed by the authorities for her love with her white lover. The main songs of the show are well-known, including "Can't Help Loving Him," "My Bill," and "Ol' Man River," and it has been made into a Hollywood film three times, in 1929, 1936, and 1951.

劇場船、興行船と訳される。アメリカのミシシッピ川を上下する船中でショーを見せることを目的に運航されたもので、娯楽設備の発達していなかった1800年代に流行した。1810年代のマイク・フィンクの船などが有名だが、本格的な最初のショーボートとされるのは31年に出現したウィリアム・チャップマン・シニアによるチャップマンズ・フローティング・シアターであった。51年には3400人収容の巨大なフローティング・サーカス・パレスも出現、南北戦争時には病院船としても使用された。南北戦争後、オーガスタス・バイロン・フレンチのニュー・センセーションと名づけた船が人気をよんだが、その後急速に衰微していった。

　この19世紀末のショーボートを舞台にしたミュージカルの古典が、1927年12月にブロードウェーで幕を開けたジェローム・カーン作曲の『ショー・ボート』Show Boatで、現代まで繰り返し上演されている。女流作家エドナ・ファーバーの同名の小説（1926）により、台本と作詞をオスカー・ハマースタイン・ジュニアが担当した。ショーボートの船長アンディのひとり娘マグノリアと賭博(とばく)師ゲイロードの恋を中心に、歌手で黒人との混血女ジュリーが、白人の恋人との恋を官憲に圧迫されるという人種差別の悲劇を絡ませている。「あの人を愛さずにはいられない」「私のビル」「オール・マン・リバー」などの主要歌曲が有名で、1929年、36年、51年の3回ハリウッドで映画化された。
