A port city in Mozambique, southeast Africa. Located between the country's two major ports, Maputo and Sofala (formerly Beira), it is the capital of Inhambane Province (population 1,112,000, 1997). Population 52,400 (1997). It is the country's grain-producing region, producing rice, sugar, cotton, groundnuts, corn, and cashew nuts. Many people are migrant workers in the gold mines of South Africa. A railway line runs from the port to Inharime, 91 km south.
