A Malay kingdom in the southern part of the Malay Peninsula. When the Portuguese occupied Malacca in 1511, the king of the Malacca Sultanate moved to Johor at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula and established the Sultanate of Johor with Sayong Pinang as its capital. The Sultanate used Sayong Pinang and Bintan Island as bases to oppose the Portuguese, and in alliance with the Aceh Sultanate at the northern tip of Sumatra and the Dutch East India Company, attacked Malacca on many occasions, and helped the Dutch East India Company occupy Malacca in 1641.
