Smuts, Jan Christiaan (Christian)
Born: May 24, 1870, Riebeekwest
[Died] September 11, 1950. Irene, Pretoria. South African politician and soldier. After graduating from Cambridge University, she opened a bar in 1895. In 1898, she became a prosecutor in the Republic of South Africa. As relations with Britain deteriorated, she negotiated autonomy for the country, and after the breakdown of these negotiations, she commanded the military in the Boer Wars. After the establishment of the Transvaal Self-Governing Colony in 1906, she promoted a policy of cooperation with L. Botha and Britain, and in 1910 the Union of South Africa was formed. She was a member of the British War Cabinet from 1917 to 1918, and served as Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa from 1919 to 1924 and from 1939 to 1948. She contributed to the establishment of the League of Nations and participated in the drafting of the United Nations Charter. Her books include Holism and Evolution (1926).
