This mass (in D major, Op. 123) was composed by Beethoven in his later years. "Missa solemnis" originally refers to the most solemn and large-scale mass in the Catholic liturgy, and as the title suggests, this work is a large-scale mass with five movements, lasting about an hour and a half, with four soloists, a mixed chorus in four parts, and an orchestra with a pipe organ. However, the content goes far beyond the framework of church liturgical music, and it should be said that it is music that strongly expresses Beethoven's personal religious views. It took Beethoven five years (1819-23) to complete this rare and unique mass, using his own interpretation of the lyrics and symphonic techniques. Part of it was premiered in St. Petersburg in 1824.
