It is one of the four principles of Islamic jurisprudence that were adopted after the death of the Prophet Muhammad to resolve new religious legal issues that arose within the Islamic community. Qiyas means analogy, and when no clear text that can be directly applied to a certain legal issue can be found in the Quran or Sunnah, it refers to resolving the immediate issue by analogy with similar cases.
