This is a Jodo sect temple located in Fukagawa Shirakawa-cho, Koto-ku, Tokyo. Its mountain name is Dohonzan Tokai-in. It began around 1620 (Genwa 6) when Reigan filled in the marshland to create Reigan Island (Reigan Island, Chuo-ku), and built the main hall, kuri (kitchen quarters), and hojo (abbot's quarters). In 1657 (Meireki 3), the temple was burned down in a major fire, but was rebuilt the following year at its current location. It flourished with three branch temples, eight sub-temples, and 90 student dormitories in seven valleys, but was reduced in size due to repeated fires. It became one of the 18 Danrin temples in the Kanto region early on, and was famous for sending many learned monks out into the world. It was later known as the place of repose for Matsudaira Sadanobu.
