As seen in the Old Testament's Genesis and Chronicles of Kings, interest in proving the legitimacy of rulers through lineage is ancient. In aristocratic society, proving lineage is important for the inheritance of titles and the creation of coats of arms. In the UK, where the aristocratic system still exists, the College of Arms, founded in 1484, is responsible for approving coats of arms and recording and storing family trees. The College of Arms is headed by three Kings: the Garter King, who is responsible for researching the Order of the Garter; the Clarenceux King of Arms, who is the heraldic officer for the area south of the Trent and Wales; and the Norroy (and Ulster) King of Arms, who is the heraldic officer for the area north of the Trent and Northern Ireland (since 1943).
