...In the late 1930s, white swing bands took the lead in jazz and spread their sweet and elegant style of performance. In reaction to this, black bands, mainly from the Midwest, started to lean towards a more aggressive style of performance that emphasized the physical sensations of black dance. These bands were called jump bands. Count Basie's band (whose theme music was "One O'Clock Jump") brought this sensation from the Midwest to New York and became popular, but some bands that continued to work in the provinces emphasized the jump sensation even more, and these became the basis for the birth of rhythm and blues in the mid-1940s. ... *Some of the terminology that refers to "jump band" is listed below.
