...In the late 1930s, white swing bands took the lead in jazz and spread their sweet and elegant style of performance. In reaction to this, black bands, mainly from the Midwest, started to lean towards a more aggressive style of performance that emphasized the physical sensations of black dance. These bands were called jump bands.
