1564‐1635 A Flemish landscape painter. Both his grandfather and father were painters. After becoming a free master in his hometown Antwerp in 1581, he probably traveled to Italy. However, for the majority of his life, he continued to paint in his hometown using traditional techniques, painting the flat grasslands and estuary landscapes of Flanders against the backdrop of the fantastical and majestic Alps. In his early years, he was influenced by Bruegel and Elsheimer, but gradually he moved towards the more naturalistic landscape expression of 17th century Holland. In 1980, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna determined that Storm at Sea, which had long been attributed to Bruegel, was a work by de Mompelle, and since then, his relationship with Bruegel has been particularly highlighted in recent years.
