This phenomenon occurs when energy stored in the form of strain within a solid is released in the form of elastic waves (sound waves) when the solid undergoes plastic deformation or fracture. It is often abbreviated as AE. It is used as a non-destructive inspection method for solid materials and structures such as metals, ceramics, and rocks, and as a means of researching the plastic deformation and fracture phenomena of these materials. A well-known example of an audible sound is the tin cry that occurs when metal tin is bent, but generally it is an ultrasonic sound, and is detected electrically by attaching an AE transducer to the solid sample.

固体が塑性変形や破壊する際に，固体内にひずみの形で蓄えられていたエネルギーが弾性波(音波)の形で放出される現象。しばしばAEと略称される。金属，セラミックス，岩石など固体材料および構造物の非破壊検査法，これらの塑性変形や破壊現象の研究手段として利用される。可聴音の例としては金属スズを曲げたときに発生するスズ鳴りtin cryが有名であるが，一般には超音波であって，固体試料にAE変換子を付けて電気的に検出する。
