A city located in the southern part of Okinawa Island, Okinawa Prefecture, bordering Naha City to the north. It was incorporated as a city in 1970. It flourished as the royal capital of the Ryukyu Kingdom, with Urasoe Castle as its center from the 12th to 14th centuries. It became a fierce battleground during the Battle of Okinawa at the end of World War II, and after the war the coastal areas became US military land. The military land area accounts for about 15% of the city area. There are food, steel, and beverage factories, and the city's industrial shipment value was the fifth highest in the prefecture (2003). As it borders Naha City, the population has increased rapidly and commerce is active. It is home to the Central Wholesale Market, Okinawa International Center, the National Theater Okinawa, and the ruins of Urasoe Castle (historic site). 19.48 km2 . 110,351 people (2010).
