A passerine bird of the family Flycatcher (illustration). Total length is about 13 cm. In the male's summer plumage, the head, back, wings, and tail are black, the chest is chestnut brown, and the neck and belly are white. There are conspicuous white spots on the wings. The female is brown overall with pale yellow eyebrows. The male's winter plumage is similar to that of the female, but is browner. It is distributed widely across most of Eurasia and Africa. It migrates to Japan as a summer bird in April and May, and breeds in central and northern Honshu. スズメ目ヒタキ科の鳥(イラスト)。全長約13cm。雄の夏羽は,頭部,背,翼,尾などが黒く,胸は栗色,くび側と腹は白い。翼には白斑があり,よく目だつ。雌は全体に褐色をしており,淡黄色の眉斑をもつ。雄の冬羽は雌に似るが,褐色みがより強い。ユーラシア大陸とアフリカの大部分に広く分布する。日本には夏鳥として4~5月に渡来し,本州中部以北で繁殖する。本州ではおもに山地の草原に生息し,北海道では低地の草原にもすむ。
