A passerine bird of the family Flycatcher (illustration). Total length is about 13 cm. In the male's summer plumage, the head, back, wings, and tail are black, the chest is chestnut brown, and the neck and belly are white. There are conspicuous white spots on the wings. The female is brown overall with pale yellow eyebrows. The male's winter plumage is similar to that of the female, but is browner. It is distributed widely across most of Eurasia and Africa. It migrates to Japan as a summer bird in April and May, and breeds in central and northern Honshu. In Honshu, it mainly lives in mountain grasslands, and in Hokkaido, it also lives in lowland grasslands.
