The fourth King of the House of Hanover (reigned 1820-1830). Eldest son of George III. He exacerbated his father's mental illness by marrying a Catholic woman and spending a lot of money on a villa in Brighton. He married Princess Caroline of Brunswick in 1795, but attempted a divorce, leading to constant scandals and making him extremely unpopular with the people. He became regent in 1810, but played a part in the decline of the king's authority by opposing the passage of the Catholic Emancipation Bill (1829).
