〘noun〙① Under the ritsuryo system, an item paid to the state in lieu of labor duties imposed on a seitei (official official) . The Yoro-ryo stipulated that a seitei should pay 26 shaku of cloth in exchange for serving 10 days of labor a year. In the third year of the Keiun era ( 706 ), the amount of yo was halved to 13 shaku. Elderly men were required to pay half of that amount, and middle-aged men a quarter. In the first year of the Yoro era ( 717 ), the amount of yo was revised again to 14 shaku of cloth for each seitei. In some regions, people were required to pay items other than cloth. 〘名〙① 令制で、正丁(せいてい)に課せられた労役の代わりに国に納入する物品。養老令では正丁が一年に一〇日間の労役に服する代わりに布二丈六尺を納めると規定している。慶雲三年（七〇六）の格によって庸は半減されて一丈三尺となった。老丁(ろうてい)はその二分の一、中男は四分の一を負担する。養老元年（七一七）にまた改めて正丁一人分を布一丈四尺とした。地方によっては布以外の代物を納めることもあった。ちからしろ。※令義解（718）賦役「正丁歳役十日。若須_レ収_レ庸者。布二丈六尺」② 平凡であること。すぐれたところがないこと。また、そのもの。凡庸。※思出の記（1900‐01）〈徳富蘆花〉八「才と庸との別も亦甚矣であるが」〔荘子‐徳充符〕③ 仕事。また、苦労。辛苦。※詩学逢原（1763）序「然れば則ち此の挙も亦庸何ぞ傷はんと」〔詩経‐王風・兔爰〕
