A general term for insects belonging to the order Thysanoptera (illustration). This name comes from the fact that children used to play with these insects that got into thistle flowers, saying "Horse, cow!" They are also called thrips in the Thysanoptera order. They are tiny insects with body lengths of 0.5 to 11 mm, with most being around 2 mm. Adults are usually yellow to brown to blackish brown, and often have white to red pigments inside their bodies. Their bodies are long and slender, flat, and occasionally cylindrical. Their mouths are cone-shaped at the tip, and are generally absorptive.
