Oriental historian and linguist. Born in Kyoto Prefecture. Originally surnamed Yoshimura, he married into the Haneda family at the age of 16. He entered the Department of Oriental History at the University of Tokyo, where he studied Oriental history under Shiratori Kurakichi, graduating in 1907 (Meiji 40). He entered Kyoto University's graduate school, where he became a lecturer and assistant professor, and studied in France. He worked with Orientalist Dr. Pelliot to investigate the Dunhuang documents that the doctor had compiled, and after returning to Japan, he was elected professor, member of the Academy, and president of Kyoto University. After retiring from government, he continued to promote Oriental studies as director of the Institute for Oriental Culture and president of the Oriental Studies Association. He initially specialized in Mongolian history, and obtained his doctorate by studying the Uighurs during the Tang dynasty, but then expanded his field to the Western Regions and Central Asia. He advocated the methodology that research outside the borders of the region should begin with learning the language of the local people, and in this way established a system of Western Region history that surpassed previous standards. In 1953 (Showa 28), he was awarded the Order of Culture. His books include "An Outline of the History of Western Region Civilization," "A History of Western Region Culture," and "Collection of Historical Essays by Dr. Haneda."
