Genre painting from China. "Official tribute" means a tribute to the central government. It is said to have started as a record of the contributions of foreign envoys at the time, written around 539 when Xiao Yi of the Liang Dynasty (later to ascend the throne and become Emperor Yuan) was in Jingzhou as a governor. In 1960, Kin Weinuo reported that a copy (11th century) of part of the record is in the Nanjing Museum. It contains drawings and descriptions of envoys from over 10 countries, and shows a barefoot Japanese envoy wearing a kosen-rufu jacket and a cloth wrapped around his waist.
