BSO - Broad System of Ordering

Japanese: BSO - びーえすおー(英語表記)Broad System of Ordering
BSO - Broad System of Ordering
A general classification table designed and developed to interconnect information systems participating in the UNISIST project. Its ultimate purpose is to be a transfer language between centers using different indexing languages. Development began in the early 1970s as a joint project between UNESCO and the International Federation of Information and Documentation, and the third edition, consisting of about 4,000 words, was published in 1978. It was later maintained by BSO Panel Ltd. in the UK, and the fourth edition (machine-readable version), consisting of about 6,800 words, was distributed in 1991. It is the latest faceted classification table, in which the selection and ranking of main categories are based on the theory of stacking levels, and the vocabulary inclusion criteria are based on the existence of academic societies and secondary sources. The centenary notation system using Arabic numerals creates syllabic symbols of three digits, two digits, and two digits each. As a simplified sorting system, in addition to being a transfer language, it is expected to be used for overviews of knowledge fields, shallow indexing, a basic system for building thesauri, and a subject guide code for organized information sources in networks.
