A perennial plant of the Acanthaceae family that grows in mountain forests (illustration). Its Japanese name means "black leaf grass," likely due to its dark green leaves. The stem is erect, 30-50 cm tall, somewhat square, and often branched. The leaves are thin, lanceolate to narrowly ovate, 5-10 cm long, 1-3 cm wide, entire with short stalks. From summer to autumn, one to several flowers bloom at the ends of the branches. The bracts are ovate, 1-2.5 cm long, 0.5-1.2 cm wide, and have short hairs on the edges. The corolla is two-lipped and reddish purple. There are two stamens and two-lobed anthers, each of which is linear and arranged in a row vertically.
