...This dialect retains the seven vowel system /i,e,ɛ,a,ɔ,o,u/ that replaced the long-short vowel system of Classical Latin. In Italy, where the tradition of using Latin as a written language is deeply rooted, the use of 'volgare' (as Italian was called in contrast to Latin) as a literary language came quite late. In any case, the oldest written record in this language, apart from the short 'Mysteries of Verona' (c. 800) which can be interpreted as either Italian or Latin, is found in the 'Placito Capuano', a document dating from March 960. ...

…この方言は古典ラテン語の長短の対立に基づく母音体系に代わって俗ラテン語に現れた，/i,e，ɛ，a，ɔ，o,u/という7母音体系をそのまま今日に伝えている。　書き言葉としてラテン語を用いる伝統が根づいているイタリアで，〈俗語volgare〉(ラテン語に対してイタリア語はこう呼ばれた)が文学語として用いられ出した時期はかなり遅かった。ともあれ，この俗語を用いて書かれた最古の記録は，イタリア語であるともラテン語であるとも解釈し得る短い〈ベローナの謎〉(800ころ)を別にすれば，960年3月にさかのぼる〈カプアの判決文Placito Capuano〉のなかに見いだされる。…
