Aswan High Dam

A rock-fill dam located about 900 km upstream from the mouth of the Nile near Aswan, Egypt. In Arabic, it is called Sadd al-'Alī. The annual flow of the Nile near Aswan varies greatly, from 151 billion tons in good years to 42 billion tons in dry years, so smoothing this out and making effective use of the water has long been a long-cherished wish of the people living along the river. The Aswan Dam, completed in 1902 at this location and later raised twice to a reservoir capacity of 5 billion cubic meters, tripled Egypt's cotton production.

エジプト，アスワンの近く，ナイル河口から約900kmの上流にあるロックフィルダム。アラビア語ではSadd al‐‘Alīという。ナイル川のアスワン付近での年間流量は豊水年で1510億t，渇水年で420億tと大きく変化するので，これを平滑化して有効に利用することは川沿住民にとって古くからの悲願であった。1902年にこの地点に完成し，その後2回かさ上げされた貯水量50億m3のアスワン･ダムによって，エジプトの綿花の生産高は3倍に躍進した。
