Neurophysiology is a field of research that seeks to understand how the brain works by using the physiological phenomena exhibited by individual neurons and their populations as clues. While cognitive science in general is attempting to understand brain functions, it still treats the brain as a black box, or studies cognitive systems and models that are unrelated to the actual brain. In contrast, neurophysiology attempts to understand sensation, perception, memory, learning, etc. at the level of single neurons or neural circuit networks consisting of populations of neurons, based on the anatomical structure and physiological functions of the brain.
