The region is divided into the basins of the Morava River, a tributary of the Danube, and the large and small rivers that flow into it. It is separated from Bohemia by the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands in the northwest and from Slovakia by the Little Carpathian Mountains, the Biele Carpathian Mountains, and the Jaborniki Mountains in the southeast, but it is open from north to south, and a trade route has been established between the Adriatic Sea and Austria in the south and Poland and the Baltic Sea in the north through the so-called Moravian Gate, which is formed by the valleys of the Morava and Odra rivers. Industry is concentrated in the Morava and Odra river basins, and the steel industry, which uses the abundant coal and iron ore in the north, has developed mainly in Ostrava, and boasts the largest production in the Czech Republic. …
