An old town in Kurihara County in northern Miyagi Prefecture. Rice and livestock farming. A mining town that developed around the Hosokura Mine, which produced lead and zinc. The town has seen a dramatic outflow of population since the mine closed. The Kurihara Rural Railway runs through the town. In April 2005, the town merged with the towns of Tsukidate, Wakayanagi, Kurikoma, Takashimizu, Ichisako, Semine, Kanari, Shibahime, and Hanayama in Kurihara County to become a city, Kurihara City. 37.23 km2 . 3,205 people (2003). 宮城県北部,栗原郡の旧町。米作,畜産を行う。鉛,亜鉛を産した細倉鉱山を中心に発達した鉱山町。鉱山の閉山により人口流出が著しい。くりはら田園鉄道が通じる。2005年4月栗原郡築館町,若柳町,栗駒町,高清水町,一迫町,瀬峰町,金成町,志波姫町,花山村と合併し市制,栗原市となる。37.23km2。3205人(2003)。
