Evergreen tree - evergreen

A tree that has a continuous replacement of leaves and does not have a deciduous period. In temperate and northern regions, the lifespan of a leaf is one year or more (generally two to three years), but evergreen coniferous trees can live for more than ten years. In the tropics, there are evergreen trees that lose their old leaves as new leaves appear, in which case the lifespan of a leaf can be only a few months. In Japan, in addition to evergreen broad-leaved trees called evergreen broad-leaved trees such as castanea, oak, and thunbergia, there are also evergreen coniferous trees such as fir, hemlock, silver fir, and mariesii. Quercus phillyraeoides is an evergreen tree that is included in the sclerophyllous trees that grow in Mediterranean climates.

葉の交代が連続的に行われ、落葉期をもたない樹木をいう。葉の寿命は温帯以北では1年ないしそれ以上（一般には2～3年）であるが、常緑針葉樹にあっては10年以上も生きている場合がある。熱帯では、新葉の出葉とともに旧葉が落葉していく常緑樹もあり、この場合は葉の寿命が数か月という状態もおこる。日本ではシイ、カシ、タブノキなど照葉樹とよばれる常緑広葉樹のほかに、モミ、ツガ、シラビソ、オオシラビソなどの常緑針葉樹がみられる。ウバメガシは、地中海式気候下に分布する硬葉樹に含められる常緑樹である。
