Japanese: ゆい(結) - ゆい

The exchange of labor between households and mutual help with work. The pronunciation of yui varies and it is called ii, e, yoi, or yoiko in various places. In Okinawa, yuimaru is a word derived from yui. It is also called temagae (exchange of labor) or temagari (borrowing of labor). Yui is when multiple households team up to provide each other with the same number of laborers for the same number of days to perform the same tasks. It is characterized by an equal exchange of labor with short-term settlement, and is adopted when each household needs a large amount of labor intensively.

家々の間で労働力を交換しあって作業を相互に手伝うこと。ユイの発音が変化してイイ，エエ，ヨイあるいはヨイコなどと各地で呼ばれる。沖縄でユイーマールというのもユイに発した言葉である。またテマガエ(手間替え)，テマガリ(手間借り)などともいう。ユイは複数の家が組んで，同じ人数の労働力を同じ日数だけ互いに提供しあって同じ作業を行うもので，短期決済による労働力の等量交換に特色があり，各家が多くの労働力を集中的に必要とする場合に採用される。
