Kaga hat

Japanese: 加賀笠 - かががさ

〘Noun〙 Sugegasa (a type of hat made in Kaga Province (southern Ishikawa Prefecture)) . It is said to have been popular since the Tenna period ( 1681-84 ), and was worn by women and nuns of townspeople. It is white in color, finely sewn, looks good, and was considered a high-quality item. Kaga sugegasa. *Ukiyo-zoshi, Koshoku Nidai -otoko (1684), 6: "When no one saw it, he took off his Kaga hat and gave it to a young woman." [Joruri, Onnagoroshi Abura no Jigoku (1721)]

〘名〙加賀国（石川県南部）から産出する菅笠(すげがさ)。天和（一六八一‐八四）の頃から流行したといわれ、町家の女房、尼などが用いた。色が白く、糸ぬいが細かくしてあり、恰好がよく、上物とされた。加賀菅笠。※浮世草子・好色二代男（1684）六「見る人なしと加賀笠(かがカサ)ぬぎ捨女の童に持せ」〔浄瑠璃・女殺油地獄（1721）〕
