Tales of Ikkyu

Japanese:
Tales of Ikkyu
Kana-zoshi. Published in 1668 (Kanbun 8). 4 volumes. Compiler and author unknown. A collection of anecdotes about the monk Ikkyu, the preface states that it is a popular interpretation of Kyounshu, but there is no real connection. It begins with witty tales from Ikkyu's childhood, and contains 46 stories, including his friendship with Ninakawa Shinuemon, urinating on the Jizo statue at Seki, and eating octopus. It was welcomed as a book of humor, and imitations such as Ikkyu Kanto Monogatari and Nikyuu Monogatari were also created. It played a major role in making Ikkyu a legend. [Noda Hisao]
