The Kingdom of Aragon was a unique federal state in which each member state maintained its own system while sharing a single kingship. It was also implemented in the Indies from the 16th century onwards. In 1137, Princess Petronilla of the Kingdom of Aragon in the eastern part of the Iberian Peninsula married Count Ramon Berenguer IV of Catalonia, and the two countries became a federal state called the Kingdom of Aragon. However, the only bond that bound the federation was the common kingship, and political independence, laws and administrative systems remained completely unchanged.
