Born: August 12, 1907, Trazuosmontes, San Martinho de Anta
[Died] January 17, 1995, Coimbra, Portugal Portuguese poet and novelist. His real name was Adolfo Correia da Rocha. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Coimbra. At the same university, he co-founded the magazine Sinal (1930), which later became Manifesto (Manifesto), with Branquinho da Fonseca. At one time, he was part of the group that published the magazine Presença (Presence). He is a representative writer of Portuguese modernism, and was active in a variety of genres, including poetry, short stories, novels, plays, and criticism. His representative works include the poems O Outro Livro de Job (Another Book of Job) (1936), Some Iberian Poemas (1952), the autobiographical novel A Criação do Mundo (The Creation) (3 volumes, 1937-39), the Diary (Diary) written in verse and prose (10 volumes, 1941-68), the collection of short stories Bichos (The Beasts) (1940), and Novos Contos da Montanha (New Tales of the Mountains) (1944).
