Flare - shomeidan

A luminous bullet that is fired from a cannon, rocket launcher, or flare gun, or dropped from an aircraft, to provide illumination. It is used for nighttime attacks, target identification, photo reconnaissance, and aircraft landing guidance. The illuminating agent used is a mixture of magnesium or aluminum powder and barium nitrate. It has a luminous intensity of tens of thousands of candlelight, and its flight time can be increased by using a parachute.

大砲やロケット発射筒、信号拳銃(けんじゅう)等から発射し、または航空機から投下して、照明する発光弾丸。夜間の攻撃や目標確認、写真偵察、航空機の着陸誘導などに使う。照明剤には、マグネシウムや、アルミニウム粉に硝酸バリウムなどを加えたものを使う。光度は数万燭光(しょっこう)に及び、落下傘で滞空時間を増す。
