In Japanese, epidemics are written as 'Kobyou', 'Eki', 'Eki', etc. in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, and are pronounced as 'Eyami', 'Enoyamai', 'Tokinoke', etc., and from the Kamakura to Edo periods they were called 'Ekaku', 'Jihen', 'Hayarimono', 'Hayariyamai', etc. The English word 'epidemic' comes from the Greek word 'epidēmos' (meaning 'on the people').
