...The vast foothills were used as pastures and ranches for the surrounding villages, but now they are being developed into ski resorts, campgrounds, and villa complexes, and are rapidly becoming a tourist destination. At the southeastern foot of the mountain is the Aichi Waterway Makio Dam, affectionately known as Lake Ontake. Built by the Water Resources Development Public Corporation in 1961, it is a multipurpose rockfill dam with an effective storage capacity of 68 million m3.
